Two years later Ubisoft released a sequel that fixed nearly all these issues and gave us a hero and a story we could care about. It had a dour, unengaging hero, a repetitive structure, samey missions, flaws in the combat and controls. All the same, Assassin’s Creed wasn’t all that we had hoped for. It looked astonishing, had sky-high production values and was packed with strong ideas. Nine years ago Ubisoft released a game that was supposed to define a console generation.
